|Divya Desam (Sanskrit: दिव्यदेशम्, Tamil: திவ்ய தேசம்) refers to the 108 revered temples dedicated to Vishnu and Lakshmi, as mentioned in the hymns of the Alvars, the poet-saints of the Sri Vaishnava tradition. These temples hold a significance similar to the Paadal Petra Sthalam, the 276 Shiva temples glorified by the Shaiva Nayanars.
Geographical Distribution
Among the 108 Divya Desams, 105 are located in India, one in Nepal, and the remaining two—Tirupparkatal and Vaikuntham—are believed to exist beyond the earthly realm. The temples are distributed as follows:
Tamil Nadu – 84 (including 25 in the Chennai Metropolitan Area)
Kerala – 11
Andhra Pradesh – 2
Gujarat – 1
Uttar Pradesh – 4
Uttarakhand – 3
Nepal – 1 (Muktinath, Saligramam)
Religious Significance
The Divya Desams are highly revered in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham, a collection of 4,000 Tamil hymns composed by the 12 Alvars. These temples follow one of two sectarian traditions of Sri Vaishnavism:
Tenkalai (Southern tradition)
Vadakalai (Northern tradition)
The Divya Desams continue to be an integral part of Vaishnava devotion and pilgrimage, attracting devotees seeking spiritual fulfillment and divine blessings.
