Swetharanyeswarar Temple, Thiruvengadu – Budhan (Mercury) Navagraha Temple

Swetharanyeswarar Temple, also known as Thiruvenkadu or Thiruvengadu Budhan Sthalam, is one of the important Navagraha Temples of Tamil Nadu, dedicated to Budhan (Mercury). The temple is located near Sirkazhi and Mayiladuthurai in Tamil Nadu and is approximately 10 km from Vaitheeswaran Koil and Sirkazhi railway stations.

The presiding deity is Lord Swetharanyeswarar, meaning “Lord of the White Forest,” and the goddess is Brahma Vidya Ambal. The temple is particularly famous for its shrine dedicated to Budha Bhagavan (Mercury) and is traditionally associated with wisdom, intelligence, education and knowledge.

Aadi Chidambaram

Thiruvengadu is also known as Aadi Chidambaram. The temple has a special association with Lord Nataraja, whose dance here is traditionally known as Hasti Natanam. The temple is also associated with the Chidambara Rahasyam.

Apart from the main deity, Lord Shiva is worshipped in special forms including Aghoramurthy and Nataraja. The Nataraja image is depicted holding seven distinctive instruments and weapons: Vetalam, Khadgam, Udukku, Mani, Kedayam, Kapalam and Trisulam.

One of the unique features of this temple is the presence of three theerthams, three murthys, three sakthis and three sacred temple trees.

The temple walls contain stone inscriptions that provide valuable historical information about the Chola dynasty and several rulers of the Vijayanagara period. These inscriptions have been documented by the Archaeological Department and contribute to the historical importance of the temple.

Thiruvengadu is traditionally regarded as one of the important 274 Paadal Petra Sthalam associated with Lord Shiva and is revered as a sacred place comparable to Banaras (Varanasi).
